Day trip

A morning at Cummins Falls, an afternoon in Cookeville

A short walk down to the Blackburn Fork river and the falls, then lunch in Cookeville.

Cummins Falls is the kind of waterfall that makes you feel like you found it yourself, even though half of Middle Tennessee already knows about it. The trail drops you down to the Blackburn Fork river, and the falls arrive all at once — no overlook, no railing, just the water and whoever else made the trip that day.

Go early if you can. The trail covers 2.1 miles round trip with 457 feet of climb — rated Easy on paper, but that doesn’t count the last stretch, a scramble over river rocks to reach the base of the falls, not a sidewalk. It gets crowded by midday in warmer months.

Afterward, Cookeville is close enough that you won’t lose the day to driving. A few places worth knowing about:

  • Savor Cookeville, for something sit-down after a morning on your feet (American).
  • Midtown Social, if you’d rather keep it casual (restaurant).
  • Crawdaddy’s, for a Tennessee classic (bar and grill).

We don’t track conditions or closures — check the park’s official page before you go, especially after heavy rain, when the river crossing can be more than ankle-deep.
